It took for me to move from Richmond Hill, NY to really appreciate all that the neighborhood has to offer. I’ve lived there since I was 11 years old until just a year ago, so all the gloss wore off a long time ago. When I moved to Atlanta, I was forced to seek all that was so readily available in what is known as “Little Guyana.”

Threading my eyebrows

On my recent trip back home to visit family I decided that I should showcase this little gem in Queens, NY, a place where u can easily find a dhal gutney or brined pigtails.  Richmond Hill is known far and wide by most Guyanese that live in New York, it is the place to go if you need anything from back home. Have I taken it for granted? I most certainly have.

A local grocery store abundant with vegetables

As I walk down the stretch of Liberty Ave from 125th street to Lefferts Blvd, I pass multiple Roti shops, Sari and Pooja stores, Grocery stores abundant with produce and many Guyanese clinging to this little piece of home in a foreign land.

I’ve watched the neighborhood evolve into what it is today, a close knit community where u find generations of families who have migrated and planted new roots.

In the past 2 weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of feasting on everything from lamb gyro, Guyanese Chinese food and a bit of Trinidadian food. Solo soft drink from Trinidad and Icee from GuyanaMy belly has never been happier; I do believe I will return home a few pounds heavier. I relished the fact that I could take a 1 block walk to liberty and buy all the ingredients I would need to make a Metemgee or if I’m not in the mood to cook I could just as easily buy it.Yum! The streets are dotted with vendors selling mangoes with pepper, plantain chips and snow cone with condensed milk.

So for those who are unable to take the 5 hour flight to South America but need a dose of Guyana I urge you to check out “Little Guyana.”

Me outside a Sari and Pooja store in Richmond Hill, NY

For the past two weeks I’ve been up north traveling between NYC and Hartford, CT.  I’ve been catching up with old friends, family, the social scene and the food that I’ve missed.   On one of the very first days here I had the immense pleasure of having the worlds best bake and shark.  My blogging cousin and I were on Liberty Ave taking photos for our blogs when we decided to step into a Trinidadian restaurant called Doubles Man  the original A&A Restaurant.  The events that followed completely took us by surprise.  We were doing a test run of Kanema’s brand new Canon Rebel and decided to take a photograph of the delicious doubles and aloo pie when it caught the attention of the owner of the restaurant.

He inquired if we were food bloggers and immediately started chatting with us and supplying us with free food and drinks.

Borderline Mommy drinking fresh grapefruit drink.

He invited us the following day to try the Bake and Shark, which is so legendary there is usually a line out the door.  I couldn’t pass up this opportunity because I’ve always wanted to try it but was always discouraged by the long lines.  On the following day, not only were we given Bake and Shark but as much food and drinks that we could eat and carry.

Me and my Aloo pie

We sat in the store for two hours and there was a continuous line to the door, and to be honest, after tasting the bake and shark  I too would stand on that line.  Folks, it was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted.  It was a hefty sandwich with tender and perfectly seasoned fried shark that was slathered in a Garlic sauce and topped with lettuce, tomatoes and pineapple!  It was DIVINE!

I'm in heaven with my Bake and Shark

We had the pleasure of tasting the noodles, fried chicken, aloo pie with goat curry, fried rice and fresh homemade juices.

Yum!

We loved it all!  The food is fresh, well seasoned and judging from the owners, I can tell it’s made with love.  They were very warm and friendly and the nicest people you will ever meet.

Ama, Aneil and I

Hamlyn, his son Aneil and daughter Ama all work side by side in this family run restaurant that started 28 years ago in Brooklyn, NY.   If you cannot make it down to the Liberty Ave location, there are 2 other locations in Brooklyn at Church ave and Nostrand ave and at St. Marks and Prospect.

I had the opportunity to accompany Mr. Jehancancook on a trip to Cleveland, OH.  I’m always excited to go to a place I’ve never been to before even if it’s not a “hotspot”.

We took a 10 hour road trip from Atlanta to Cleveland and passed through the rolling hills and lush greenery of Kentucky and Tennessee and through Ohio’s farmland.    I can’t say much about Cleveland because I wasn’t able to do a lot of  sightseeing  in 2 days.

I did visit Shakers Square which is a quaint shopping area with boutiques, art galleries and restaurants.  All 10 minutes that it took me to walk the entire square was quite interesting.   On our first night  Mr. Jehancancook, myself and a few of his coworkers went to dinner at Momocho, a restaurant one of his coworkers found on Diner, Drive-ins and Dives.  The menu was intriguing, it ranged from guacamole 6 different ways to braised duck and yam enchiladas.  We tried the guacamole sampler which allows u to order any 3 types, we went with the goat cheese guacamole, smoke trout guacamole and  pineapple guacamole, they accompanied with heaping bowls of tortilla chips.  We ate it all.

For dinner I had the Adobo Lamb Chops that came with goat cheese avocado and a delicious spinach dotted with raisins and pepitos.

It happened to be Cinco de mayo so I had 2 cucumber margaritas and a pineapple margarita, which were divine.   My only disappointment was that  we don’t have a Momocho in Atlanta.   I should tell you to be prepared to wait if you’re going to visit, maybe because it was Cinco De Mayo but this place was packed and had a bit of a wait to get a table.

The rest of my trip my meals ranged from Corned beef sandwiches to Shrimp fried rice from PF Changs, not at all healthy but delicious.

On the last leg of our trip we decided to stop in North Carolina to visit some good friends that we haven’t seen in forever.  It involved dominoes, beers, soccer games, a sweet 16th birthday party and just an all around good time.
